Wooyoungmi - spring summer 13 Campaign

"WOOYOUNGMI spring/summer 2013 introduces a collaborative work with Seoul based artist Osang Gwon. Gwon has garnered attention in the international art world with his remarkable photo-collage sculptures.

As an artist Osang Gwon is himself very much inspired by fashion and lifestyle magazines, believing that fashion photography, both editorial and advertising campaigns, can reflect the current times in a creative and imaginative way. His tendency to mix cultures within his work, and the overall mish-mash technique employed, made Gwon an ideal partner to re-interpret the multi-cultural mix of the WOOYOUNGMI spring/summer 2013 collection. With his unique approach and visually striking 3-dimensional work, WOOYOUNGMI was pleased to invite him to become the 3rd artist to collaborate with the brand on its advertising campaign.

For this project Osang Gwon created two life-size sculptures “Nuages Pattern” (2012, c-print, mixed media, 220x63x50cm) and “Aztec Pattern” (2012, c-print, mixed media, 217x135x83cm), both depicting male models clad in WOOYOUNGMI SS13 clothing. “Nuages Pattern” shows a blond male, gazing into the distance. He stands straight and does not seem to notice the snake at his feet, which is just about to bite his right shin. The artist deliberately leaves the scene open for various interpretations. Is he also alluding to the Chinese Year of the Snake, which starts in February of this year? The scene is reminiscent of an ancient statue, where the figure would be fighting the snake. Yet in this case he is not.
“Aztec Pattern” features a leopard figure, which is draped around the shoulders of a standing model. This is Gwon’s reference to classical sculpture and his observation of a link between the poses of today’s fashion photography and the postures of these ancient statues."  www.wooyoungmi.com
